Understanding back pain… what’s going on?

Back pain often has more than one cause. Things like how you sit, stand, move and use your body are all factors in how your back feels and how well you move, and they also contribute to back pain developing over time. As osteopaths, we look at how your whole body is working together, because posture, muscle tension and stiff joints can all contribute to pain and how well you move. Common factors that can contribute are:

  • Everyday posture strain

  • Lifting or repetitive tasks

  • Sedentary behaviour / prolonged sitting

  • Previous injury or trauma

  • Muscle imbalance and weakness

How Osteopathy Can Help with Back Pain:

Osteopathy takes a whole-body view. Rather than looking at one area in isolation, we assess how different parts of your body interact and affect how you move and feel. Instead of only treating the area that hurts, we look at how different joints, muscles and movement patterns are working together.

By improving movement, reducing tension and addressing the ways your body has adapted to compensate for back pain, osteopathy helps you move more comfortably, feel more balanced and perform better in daily life. Treatment also aims to address the factors contributing to your symptoms so that improvements are sustained, rather than offering only short-term relief.

What to expect at your appointment

Your first appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, goals and medical history, followed by a movement and physical assessment to see how your body is working when you move. Treatment is included in this first session so you can start feeling the benefits straight away. We then create a tailored care plan which will include:

  • Hands-on treatment: soft tissue techniques, mobilisation and gentle manipulation (if appropriate)

  • Movement support: posture, movement, strength and flexibility

  • Lifestyle and ergonomic advice: strategies to reduce strain and prevent recurrence

  • Self-care support: exercises and practical recommendations you can use between sessions

Ongoing appointments build on your progress with treatment and regular reassessments, allowing us to adapt your bespoke plan and support your healing journey so you can move with more ease and resilience. We guide you through every step so you feel confident and informed.

Who can benefit from osteopathy treatment for back pain

Office-based worker: long hours sitting at a desk with back pain building through the day. Treatment helps reduce tension from prolonged sitting and improve posture to ease daily discomfort.

Recreational runner: back pain develops around the 45-minute mark on longer runs, especially when tired. Treatment supports movement efficiency and reduces compensation patterns so they can train more comfortably.

Recurring back pain flare-ups: experiences back pain that comes and goes, often triggered by stress, activity or certain movements. Treatment addresses contributing factors and build resilience so flare-ups become less frequent and less disruptive.

Older adult: feelings of stiffness, restriction and pain through the lower back, making tasks such as bending, walking or getting out of a chair more difficult. Treatment helps improve mobility, ease stiffness and support confident movement.

Manual or physical worker: back pain develops at work, after lifting, carrying or repetitive physical tasks. Treatment helps reduce tension, improve movement mechanics and lower the strain placed on the back at work.
