ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia & Long-Covid
Causes
Viral Infections
One of the most common themes in patients is a viral infection. Glandular fever (Epstein-Barr), Human herpes virus 6 and more recently COVID-19 are regular offenders.
A viral infection is usually the final trigger before patients develop ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia or Long-COVID, although it may be one of a number issues to cause these conditions.
Immune Issues
Problems with a patient’s immune system is a common issue, as patients struggle to fight off infection and are suffer repercussions or adverse effects for longer than normal.
Dr Perrin hypothesis a number of causative factors affecting the nervous system and lymphatic system which form part of the immune system, which accounts for this.
Hormone Imbalance
Patients suffering with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and Long-COVID can experience abnormal hormone levels with many visiting an endocrinologist before being advised The Perrin Technique.
Times of hormonal change such as at puberty and menopause can often be triggers for ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia due to pre-dispositions making it harder for the body to process the fluctuations
Dr Perrin hypotheses that abnormal hormone levels are caused by toxic interference in the brain - specifically in the hormone producing hypothalamus, pituitary glands or adrenal glands.
Stress
Repeat, sustained and deep rooted stress triggers persistent inflammation in the body and has a greater impact on your physical and psychological health.
Stress is one of the biggest causes of neuroinflammation - having a major effect on our brain. High levels of inflammation in the body plays a big role in the development of ME/CFS.
Physical Trauma
Physical trauma is an injury to the body; this can be in many forms such as a blunt force trauma where a force strikes the body, or an ongoing niggling physical strain. Specifically a history of an injury affecting the head and back are linked to the development of ME/CFS, FMS and Long-COVID
Surgery is also a form of physical trauma.
The aftermath of any traumatic event jolts the autonomic nervous system into action and can adversely affect the body’s fight or flight response.
Emotional Trauma
Emotional or psychological trauma can be caused by a singular event such as a bereavement or from ongoing, chronic stresses, caused by upsetting events or anxieties which intrude into daily life;
People can go for years living with symptoms of emotional and psychological trauma and there is significant connection between trauma and chronic health conditions.
